Bicycle Accidents

Common bicycle accident injuries include:

  • Head or brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Broken bones
  • Neck and back injuries
  • Severe road rash
  • Wrongful death

The Rights and Responsibilities of Bicycle Riders

Bicycle riders have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers. They must stop at traffic signs and signals and observe traffic laws. Bicyclists must display lights and reflectors while riding at night, and must stay as close as possible to the right-hand side of the road.

In the case of a bike accident in which the bicyclist was out of compliance with any of these conditions, he or she may be partially at fault, but still has the right to recover damages.

Broken Bone Injuries

A fracture and a broken bone are the one and the same. There are two different types of fractures:

  • An open fracture results in a tear in the skin and may have a protruding bone.
  • A closed fracture is when the fractured bone remains under the skin.

During an accident a person may experience a fracture, as well as other injuries.

Indications of a possible fracture include:

  • A snapping sound heard during the injury
  • A snap felt during the injury
  • Movement where there is not typically a joint on the body
  • A bone has punctured through the skin
  • Severe pain of the injured area
  • Increasing pain in the injured area
  • Swelling and/or bruising
  • A joint or limb that is noticeably out of place
  • Inability to walk on or move injured body part
  • Loss of feeling and/or tingling of the injured area

If you suffer a bone injury, medical treatment is necessary to determine the severity of the injury and to assess the body for any other ailments. Recovery may take a few weeks to a few months for a full recovery, depending on the location of the injury and the age and health of the injured person.

Pedestrian Accidents

Every year there are thousands of road accidents in the United States, and over 100,000 of these involve pedestrians getting injured or killed. More than fifty percent of pedestrian accidents in the United States result in the death of the pedestrian. Nearly fifty percent of pedestrian accidents that result in death occur between 3:00pm and 4:00pm, and so in many cases they involve school children who are on their way home from school. Statistics show that it is children, along with the elderly, that are most at risk of injury or death as a result of a pedestrian accident. The majority of these deaths and injuries are the result of a run in with a negligent or careless driver.

This includes negligence such as:

  • The driver not paying attention or being pre-occupied
  • The driver speeding and not adhering to the limits set on that particular road
  • The driver failing to stop at pedestrian crossing and in other pedestrian right of way areas
  • A driver failing to pay and attention while driving the vehicle
  • A driver that is over the legal alcohol limit or has been taking drugs

Slip and Fall Accidents

There are 4 groups of slip and fall (fall down) accidents:

  • Trip-and-fall accidents, where there is something in your way- like a stack of books in a walkway that is normally clear;
  • Stump-and-fall accidents, where there is a bump in the roadlike a power cord that runs between two cubicles that wasn't there previously;
  • Step-and-fall accidents, such as a missing manhole cover or utility cover in the sidewalk; and
  • Slip-and-fall accidents, for example, you slip and fall on a wet or greasy floor and there are no warning signs posted anywhere.

Many debilitating injuries arise from people slipping or tripping on wet, slippery or greasy surfaces, as well as unexpected holes in sidewalks that result from missing manhole or utility covers, and other hidden hazards on areas that residential and business property owners as well as local, city, state and even federal government entities should be properly maintaining. Slip and fall attorneys specializing in fall down injuries and slip and fall accidents are ready and available to assist you with your personal injury lawsuit claim.
